Fencing FAQs

If you’re reading this, it means that you’re interested in fencing. Hooray! There are some things you need to know…

How do you place students?

Coach will place students. Placement is based on experience, choice of weapon and other factors. Other factors may or may not include things like your age, experience, choice of weapon, other class choices, etc.

Do we have to buy equipment?

Nope - not for co-op. However, you must be wearing long pants and you must have sneakers. Gentlemen need an athletic cup. Coach will absolutely not let you fence if you don’t have these things.

Not a FAQ: Attendance is extremely important!!

If you are looking at your calendar and you know that you have to miss more than one co-op, you should not start beginning fencing this semester. We understand that things come up and we will do our best to work with you if you get sick, etc. (Applies to beginning fencers only…)

Is this safe?

Yep - fencing is one of the safest sports ever!

Yeah - but what about equipment?

For beginners, coach brings all her stuff with her. You just have to wear long pants, and gentlemen need that athletic cup.

Who is teaching this?

Coach Sandra is a nationally ranked vet - in fact, she'll never tell you because she's too modest but right now, she's ranked third. She teaches at Prospect Fencing Club, and has been with CHANGE for the past two years. Since we've had her, we have two students competing at national competitions, a slew of others that are just starting to compete, and still even more that have discovered a new hobby.

If you have other questions - please email me before signing up!! Note that we do not allow people to take fencing without attending co-op.
