Do I have to do everything?

No! You can pick and choose the conferences that work for you.

How are topics/committees assigned?

The conference gives us topics about 3-6 weeks before a conference (although sometimes you have less time!) In that time, you are expected to research your topic, country and write a one-page paper. How you get assigned your country/committee totally depends on the conference. Sometimes we let you choose, sometimes I assign countries. (Sometimes they assign them for me!)

What do you do?

Basically, you argue and debate and attempt to pass resolutions that favor your country. You'll have to write a one or two-page paper and you'll have to research and prepare. But somehow, everyone loves it. I promise.

Who can go?

We will tell you whether the conference we're considering is appropriate for newbies, experienced, younger, etc. Each one is different and we want your student to feel successful!

What do you wear?

Appropriate attire is business western. Guys must be in ties (suit is appropriate if you have it) and girls must be in either a pantsuit or business suit, business-appropriate skirt/dress, dress shoes, etc. No sandals, no flip-flops, no polo shirts in lieu of collared shirt and ties, etc.

How much does it cost?

It varies and some conferences offer financial aid. There is often a hotel involved. BUT some of our industrious students are working on raising some money to cover some costs.

Why do this?

There is a huge benefit from learning how to argue your point successfully. There is also a huge benefit from having to write papers, learning how to negotiate with others and being forced to speak publicly. ;-) Some students who do this in high school use it as part of a credit - others just use it as an extracurricular.

It does look great on a college admissions application... but don't do it just for that. Consider it a side benefit.
